The idea of a 'Crash Course' in grassroots organizing in Romania came from young Romanian activists in EYFA's network. This generation knows of the dictatorship through the stories of their parents but it is itself dealing with a climate of religious conservatism and severe nationalism. The rigid hierarchical structure of the larger society is reproduced in the (lack of) activities of its youth. This Crash Course wants to break with this tradition with a crash and provides a space for youth to learn and experience an alternative way of organizing in a non-hierarchical horizontal fashion that is inclusive and asks of people to become active. Romania is lacking a strong progressive civil society and in this week of practical workshops we try to lay a base.
