Biketour 2009 - Call for Volunteers
Biketour is looking for two EVS volunteers to work in Croatia from 1st February 2009 for 7-8 months.
Because of funding the volunteer must be resident in Netherlands before begining the placement. The EVS scheme is open to those who are 30 years and under.
The Biketour has been promoting sustainable transport and getting participants to the annual Ecotopia gathering for over 15 years. This
year, the final destination will be different (a camp on environmental issues in a still to be determined location), but the methods will be
the same. Pedaling through a different part of Europe every year, the Biketour is for anyone interested in do-it-yourself culture, social and ecological justice. Moving all our stuff by muscle power, Biketour links with local environmental campaigns en route. For example, taking part in action or workshops. We create an international, mobile eco-community as well as joining local direct-action. We will visit interesting places on our way: alternative, environmental, artistic projects and communities, nature areas and people who preserve them or resist their destruction.
The job of the EVS volunteers will involve:
- Living in Croatia for 8 months, getting to know local environmental
campaigns
- Update/maintain Biketour website
- Write funding application
- Assist in visa procedures of Biketour participants
- Promote Biketour on a European level
- Identify groups/organisers in different countries and provide them
with support.
- Maintain contacts with different national/local groups and organise
meetings
- (Possibly) cycle the route/part of the route of Biketour to test
suitablility, know the hills etc.
- Assist in finding (cheap) accomodation along the route for 20+
cyclists, (ie: campsites, schools, community-halls etc.)
- Assist in providing route maps to biketour participants in summer 2009,
- Take part in the biketour summer 2009
- Organise Biketour's participation in actions and campaigns along the
route, together with local activists (ie: Critical Mass, demonstrations,
banners, leaflets, campaigns)
Biketour 2009 will be focused on climate change and related issues.
The EVS volunteer should have the following skills:
- They must like bikes and cycling,
- Any experience of bicycle-touring would be an advantage.
- Good spoken English is important as English is the common language of
most Biketour participants.
- Ability to communicate by email and telephone (mostly in English) and
organise parts of biketour from a distance is essential.
- Any experience of online tools, email-lists, website-development,
blogging etc would be an advantage.

activists/environmentalists,
- Any experience of building local environmental campaigns would be an
advantage.

materials (mostly in English) to promote the Biketour.

materials into local language(s)
Please do not hesitate to apply if you do not have all these skills but are willing and eager to learn. This is a great opportunity to gain skills and experience.
The EVS scheme will fund travel expenses, accomodation, food and pocket money for the volunteer. However, the position is not officially 'paid.'
