Urgent call from Mayo, Ireland
hi there,
I'm emailing you all from mayo to urge you to come to up here and take part in actions against shell. in the last few weeks we've seen an upscale in shells work here and an increase in gardai and shell security- as a direct result of our increase in activity and numbers! we are awaiting the arrival of the solitaire one of the largest pipe laying ships in the world which is currently anchored off the coast of killybegs. the solitaire will attempt to lay the pipe from the landfall site to the well head. we expect the solitaire in the coming days.
in the last few days you may have seen in the media that the navy ship the Le Orla has been sent here to police the waters also. we have a great water team here who have been kayaking, swimming and rowing dinghy's out to the navy ship, shell work boats etc. look at the reports on indymedia to see what they have been getting up to. while on land we have been blockading the compound site with locals. shell are getting ready for the pipe laying part of the project by dredging a channel at the end of the compound. we have had 2 really successful blockades of the compound last week. however this week our numbers are lower and are tactics have proved less successful. now we are calling on activists and concerned citizens from all over the country to come to mayo and help us put a halt to this disastrous project.
our spirits are high here and we have a good amount to people coming through here but we need more, the more of us there are the more effective our actions are. So i would say to you if you have any plans to come here in the future NOW IS THE TIME! (we have a great camp and house for people to stay in). Members of gluaiseacht have been really involved in this campaign for over 3 years now and we see this as the most critical part of the campaign so far. We need a victory, if we can turn the solitaire back it will be a huge boost to the campaign both locally and nationally.
if you really cant make it up here there is plenty to do from home, solidarity protests, fund raisers, information sharing, stalls in colleges. If you don't know enough about the campaign look at www.indymedia.ie/mayo or www.shelltosea.com
hope to see LOADS of you up here, tracey
